Work for Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust and Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) Sunday protested the finance minister's declaration of corporatising Bangladesh Railway (BR) in his budget speech, and demanded full government control in its operation to facilitate the small income groups.
They said the corporatisation of railway would leave a bad impact on the national economy, and the less costly and pro-poor rail service would be captive in the hands of some quarters.
WWB Trust and POBA said these during a sit-in in front of Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka University.
The speakers said many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been closed down due to unavailability of cost effective railway service, as many stations were shut down. They demanded reopening of those stations and increasing the BR manpower to run efficiently.
