JESSORE, March 29 (BSS): Several thousand workers of Akiz Jute Mills Limited in Nawapara industrial area of the district today observed hunger strike demanding withdrawal of its closure order.
The workers of the mill gathered in front of the mills and observed token hunger strike from 10.00 am peacefully.
The authorities closed down the mill on March 23 claiming that it was "due to lack of security."
After the closure, the workers staged demonstrations in protest against the closure decision and also blocked Jessore-Khulna highway earlier.
The workers alleged that the authorities declared the mills closed without any provocation and as "part of a conspiracy."
The local people alleged that the authority is trying to grab a road that connects the Jessore-Khulna highway and also villages of the adjacent areas.
