Woes of homebound passengers

Tuesday, 8 September 2009

LIKE every year people are struggling to go home for Eid. The long queues before the ticket counters speak of it. Sometimes artificial scarcity is created by the service providers in collusion with 'ticket blackers' to raise the fares. It creates an extra burden for the passengers.
The ticketing system should be digitised so that a passenger can book tickets without visiting the counter.
More buses should be pressed into service, especially during the Eids, to ensure availability of seats. The BRTC's special bus service to different destinations is too inadequate. The private bus companies should also improve their service by pressing more buses on different routes. They should give up the practice of pressing unfit vehicles into the services. If they fail, the authorities should take punitive action. It would reduce the incidence of road accidents. The Bangladesh Railway should press new trains into the service to ensure passenger comfort. The old ones should be modified and renovated. If enough trains ply, passengers would not have to travel on the roof-tops.
We all know the sufferings and dangers facing passengers who have to travel by the water way. Over-loaded ferries and launches often cause accidents and loss of lives. So, BIWTC should increase and improve its transportation facilities so that no passenger faces the risk of life.
The government should closely monitor the situation round the year, particular during the Eid rush.
