Woman pressing for recognition of marriage killed

JHENIDAH, Sept 30 (UNB): Two days after holding a press conference in Jhenidah district town against the father of her son for not recognising the relation, a woman was strangulated to death and her son was injured by miscreants in Shailakupa upazila on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Sajeda Khatun, 45, of Bagutia village in the upazila.
Locals said a group of 27 miscreants broke into the house of Shajeda, took her and her son Jinnah Alam, 28, out of the house around 11:30pam on Monday.
The miscreants stabbed Jinnah with sharp weapons in front of the house and left him there, but took Sajeda to a nearby field of the village.
Later, the miscreants strangulated the woman to death at the field and hurriedly left the spot.
On information, police recovered the dead body and sent it to hospital for autopsy.
On September 28, Sajeda held a press conference in Jhenidah town, raising a complaint against Rafiqul Islam, ex-chairman of Abaipur union council, for not recognising that he secretly had married Sajeda back in 1983 and they had a child of the marriage still unrecognised in society.
Officer-in-charge of Shailakupa Police Station Sagir Miah confirmed the incident.
