Women entrepreneurs facing hazards in getting loans

Women entrepreneurs claimed that they were facing hazards and in most cases were not getting loans from commercial banks though they were playing a vital role in Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector in Bangladesh.
They made the claim at a workshop jointly organised by Small and Medium Enterprises Foundation (SMEF) and Mutual Trust Bank Ltd titled Encouraging Women Entrepreneurs- Access to Finance, Inclination to Borrow and Compliance of Credit in the conference room of SMEF in the city Thursday.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed urged women entrepreneurs to come up and diversify their ownership of business portfolio.
He urged them to be aware and be able to express their demand to commercial banks and get the loan.
He also urged them to go through constant training to build themselves up and prove themselves.
Mutual Trust Bank Ltd has offered a loan for only women entrepreneur named 'MTB Bhaggoboty'. Any women entrepreneur can get loan from Tk 1,00,000 to Tk 50,00,000 without any deposit with a 10 per cent interest rate. They can pay it from 12 months to 36 months time limit.
Anis A Khan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mutual Trust Bank said 'We have 36 branches and five SME service centres already. We will establish another eight branches and five SME services centres in 2009.'
As a chief guest he said that there would be women entrepreneur cell in every branch.
Ahmed Ali Shah, Deputy General Manager of SMEF said Mutual Trust Bank disburse around 610 million among 1440 entrepreneurs since 2007.
Expansion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector was the only way to develop sustainable industrialisation in the country and women entrepreneur's contribution was growing rapidly, organisers said.
Around 35 women entrepreneurs participated in the workshop and shared their view, experiences and hazards to get loan from different banks.
High officials of both the organisations were present on the occasion.
