Migration of the country's women workers increased by 6.63 per cent in 2009 though the overall overseas employment in the year witnessed a fall of 46 per cent due to the global recession, overseas employment ministry source said.
At the end of last calendar year, a total of 22,224 Bangladeshi women secured their jobs in foreign lands, mainly in oil-rich Middle East countries, the source added.
According to data revealed by the state-run Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), Lebanon was the prime destination of Bangladeshi female job seekers in 2009, followed by the United Arab Emirates.
Lebanon alone employed 59 per cent of total Bangladeshi female workers, numbering 13,062, mainly as housemaids and healthcare service providers. The UAE, which employed 46 per cent of the country's total overseas employment in 2009, was the second largest women employer, providing jobs to 6,095.
