Women's economic empowerment 'is pre-condition to nat'l development'

Speakers at a seminar stressed the need for undertaking a long-term plan for development of women entrepreneurship aiming to empower them economically.
They said women's economic empowerment is a pre-condition for national development and sustainable democratic system.
They were speaking at a seminar on women entrepreneurship development in Gazipur, organised by the Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI) in cooperation with the Centre for International Private Enterprise.
Economic empowerment of women at the country's grassroots level is necessary not only for overall economic development but also for establishing a balanced and equitable society with social and economic justice.
Women's economic empowerment is also an essential component to ensure other aspects of women's empowerment.
It is impossible to ensure the country's overall development without incorporating women folks, who constitute 50 per cent of total population, into the mainstream economy.
Additional deputy commissioner (revenue) of Gazipur district Mirza Tarique Hikmat attended as the Chief Guest while Gazipur Pourasava Chairman A. K. M. Mozammel Hoque, President of Gazipur Chamber of Commerce Golam Dastagir Gazi and the faculty member of the business school of Humber College in Canada Ms. Sheryon Bette were present as special guests.
The seminar was presided over by Selima Ahmad, President of BWCCI.
Munir Uddin Shamim, Project Coordinator of BWCCI presented a keynote paper titled 'Women Entrepreneurship Development in Bangladesh: Opinion of the different stakeholders'.
The seminar was attended by women entrepreneurs, journalists, representatives of non-government organisation (NGO), professionals, civil society members, business leaders, academics, bankers, and researchers.
Delivering her welcome speech, Selima emphasised the need for a gender-friendly policy framework and positive social and economic environment.
Selima requested all stakeholders to come up with their support for women entrepreneurship development.
Based on an interactive discussion, a set of recommendations were placed for promotion of women in business and industry, which include formulation of a gender friendly policy framework, implementation of positive policy, provision of collateral-free loan, separate market for women SMEs, easy access to formal credit facilities, training and marketing network and building of awareness.
