Workers attack 12 RMG factories in Ashulia
FE Report | Monday, 11 August 2008
A section of garments workers attacked over a dozen apparel factories in Jampara, Ashulia Sunday compelling some 50 factory owners to keep their establishments closed for over an hour.
Around a hundred workers of Polania Garments started staging demonstration on Dhaka-Tongi highway demanding payment of their arrears from the owner, who closed down the factory since August 2 last, said a police officer of Ashulia Thana.
The police officer said the workers gathered in front of the factory in the morning as the owner promised to clear their arrears. The workers became angry and took to the street when they failed to track the owner.
The agitated workers attacked the factory and chanted slogans against the owner. They also attacked other garment factories located in the area. Ashulia thana police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Authorities of over 50 factories in that area kept their factories closed for over an hour to avoid any untoward incident spilling over.
The demonstration disrupted traffic on the road for half an hour from 8am, witnesses said.
Police informed the owner of Polania Garments of the matter. The owner came to the factory at about 2pm and started the payment of arrears to the workers, police officer Mokhlesir Rahman told the FE.
In another incident, a group of apparel workers set a sweater factory on fire at Gazipur Chowrasta at 8.30pm Sunday.
The workers attacked Meem Sweater Factory and set it on fire demanding payment of their arrear salaries, Gazipur Sadar Thana police said.
Police and fire-brigade personnel rushed to the spot and were trying to extinguish the fire until the writing of this report at 9.50pm Sunday. There was no report of any casualty, said duty officer of Gazipur Sadar Thana.
