Workers of Nippon Garments stage demo for arrears

Wednesday, 6 January 2010

FE Report
Workers of Nippon Garments Tuesday demanded immediate payment of outstanding wages and reopening of the unit, which has been closed since October last year following unrest and death of three people at Tongi.
Hundreds of workers of the factory staged demonstrations in front of the country's apex apparel body, BGMEA Bhaban, to press home their demands.
The workers also besieged Panthapath link road at about 1:00pm disrupting vehicular movement for two hours that resulted in nagging traffic congestions on Farmgate to Karwan Bazar and Saatrasta to Maghbazar roads.
The agitators warned of massive protests, if the factory does not reopen soon. They also sought BGMEA intervention to resolve the crisis.
The demonstrators dispersed in the evening following assurance from the BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy.
He also sought minimum 15 days for negotiation with the factory owners to solve the crisis.
The authorities of the garment factory shut down the unit on October 30 last year without any prior notice citing global economic meltdown as a reason.
Nippon Garments Ltd, owned by Abedin group, started production at Ershad Nagar in Tongi in 1982.
