Workers of three closed factories at Adamjee, Dhaka EPZs get dues

Three recently closed factories at Adamjee Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and Dhaka EPZ have paid dues to their workers.
The RMG factories are Kwun Tong Apparels Ltd at Adamjee EPZ, and Lenny Fashions Ltd and Lenny Apparels Limited at Dhaka EPZ.
The efforts of Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA) made the payment initiative possible after several rounds of discussions between the BEPZA executive chairman and representatives of the factories, said a press release issued on Tuesday.
The British Virgin Island owned Kwun Tong Apparels Ltd had been operating business at Adamjee EPZ since 2006. But due to the global economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the company declared closed for not being able to run the business.
BEPZA asked Kwun Tong Apparels repeatedly to pay the dues to the workers of the factory. In this regard, the company recently paid Tk 185.8 million to 5,787 workers against their provident fund (PF) and gratuity.
Hong Kong (China) owned Lenny Fashions and Lenny Apparels Ltd. had been operating RMG business at Dhaka EPZ since 1999 and 2010 respectively.
At present, the demand for the woven garments has decreased and the orders from the buyers have also stopped due to the Covid-19 situation, said the release. As a result, the two factories declared closed their business activities and paid dues of Tk 422.5 million to 6,730 workers.
BEPZA has been operating eight EPZs across the country through maintaining workers-management-owner synergy, the release added.
