The government of late has decided to strengthen the operation of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) to rein in the spiraling prices of essentials, officials said.
"We have already instructed the authorities concerned to prepare a work plan for strengthening the government's trading arm," Feroz Ahmed, secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, told the FE.
The move has been initiated in line with the direction of the chief adviser of the caretaker government Fakhruddin Ahmed, officials said, adding this is to ensure adequate supply of essential commodities in the face of unusual price hike.
Side by side strengthening the activities of the TCB, Feroz said: "We have also instructed the agency to start the process for importing essential commodities."
TCB, in the last five months, due to various hurdles including financial crisis, bureaucratic cobweb and manpower shortage could not import any commodity to support the government in its struggle to rein in prices of essentials, officials said.
