Workshop begins to prepare draft nat'l sustainable development strategy

Monday, 18 February 2008

A two-day national consultation workshop began in the city Sunday seeking to prepare a draft national sustainable development strategy paper for the country, reports UNB.
Department of Environment (DoE) in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Centre for Asia-Pacific, organised the workshop titled 'National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) for Bangladesh' at the RDEC Bhahan auditorium of LGED at Agargaon.
Chief Adviser's Special Assistant for Environment and Forests Barrister Raja Devashish Roy inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest with Additional Environment Secretary and DoE Director General Dr Khondoker Rashedul Haque in the chair.
Speaking at the workshop, Raja Devashish Roy laid emphasis on environment-friendly sustainable development as coordinated mechanism.
Towards its implementation, he said, there is a need for formulation of more holistic NSDS that can be built on existing strategies or plans by integrating economic, social and environmental objectives in accordance with the Johannesburg Plan for Implementation (JPFI).
Raja Devashish Roy said that for sustainable development, the government has taken a number of measures towards control and prevention of the country's environmental pollution. "The government has imposed ban on the import of two-stroke three wheelers in the country."
He hoped that the national consultation workshop would be able to finalise the draft NSDS and come out with concrete proposals in the form of recommendations. "Our actions, I am confident, will open up an endless horizon of pollution-free environment in the region," he said.
