Tuesday, 19 June 2007

A workshop on e-governance under the Support to Information and Commu-nication Technology (SICT) project held in the city Sunday to create awareness among the officials of the government's three divisions, reports UNB.
The three-year SICT project already commenced its activities in July 2006 for strengthening the Planning Division, Economic Relations Division (ERD) and Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) through Information and Communica-tion Technology (ICT).
The government's Planning Ministry and United Nations Development Programme UNDP jointly organised the workshop on "Awareness Creation Workshop on e-Governance" at LGED Bhaban Sunday.
The aim of the project is to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of work processes and procedures and integrate decision making and development efforts of these divisions by enabling offices in the three divisions to access each other's resources and databases instantaneously, share electronic files and document and communicate more efficiently.
Procurement of hardware to support development of ICT infrastructure is underway and substantial portion of funds would be deployed by July 2007 under this project. Necessary assessment studies are being initiated to determine training needs and software development needs for the government offices.
In the inaugural session, Planning Secretary Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury said the inter-connectivity for sharing data among the ministry would be set up gradually so that officials could perform their duties efficiently in a short time.
Mentioning e-governance facility in Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore, the secretary said Bangladesh might reach mid level position in proficiency within 10-15 years by using ICT properly.
