World Cup fever grips the country

Friday, 6 June 2014

A group of youth and children has hung a big flag of Argentina near my home in the city. They are taking pride in the fact that theirs is the biggest flag in the locality - much bigger than any flag of the Brazil supporters. They looked very enthusiastic and a good crowd gathered to see the Argentina flag. I just smiled seeing their excitement over the upcoming World Cup which will be held far away from our country. Our national football team has no link with the Brazilian football. We are far away from being qualified for the World Cup, but still people here are very excited to support a team and cheer for them, and even cry in their debacle. Football has such a universal language.
I am a big fan of football and when the World Cup starts, my daily life revolves around it. Dhaka's skyline is already occupied with the colourful flags of Brazil and Argentina. We may find the flags of other countries who are participating in the World Cup extravaganza but their numbers are very limited. I hope this World Cup will bring back the popularity of Bangladeshi football. We have huge potentials in football, we just need to tap the pool of talents.
