World loses 1.3b tonnes of food a year as waste: FAO

ROME, May 12 (Commodity Online): In a stunning revelation, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) said nearly one third of the food produced in a year were lost or wasted by humans. In a study, Global Food Losses and Food Waste, FAO said the quantity of loss was estimated to be approximately 1.3 billion tonnes The study was commissioned by the FAO from the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology for Save Food, an international congress being held in Düsseldorf, on May 16-17.
