World Statistics Day observed at EWU

Bangladesh Statistical Association (BSA) and East West University jointly organized a day-long seminar on Friday (October 22) at the auditorium of East West University to observe the "World Statistics Day". The theme of the seminar was "Statistics for All".
Air vice marshal (rtd.) A K Khandker, B.U. psa, minister, Ministry of Planning graced this occasion as the chief guest and inaugurated this seminar. In his speech, the minister said that the need of collecting objective statistics is a must to formulate the development plans of our country. We expect that the officials in this field will present appropriate and true statistics before the public of the country. The special guest in this programme was Mrs. Riti Ibrahim, secretary, Statistics Division while Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, president, Board of Trustees of East West University also spoke on this occasion as a co-host of this programme. The programme was chaired by Prof. Dr. M. Nurul Islam, president, Bangladesh Statistical Association and vice chancellor, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University. Also, Abdur Rashid Sikder, secretary general of this association delivered speech to the audience.
The chief guest reiterated that statistics is a tool for achieving the objectives of Millennium Development Goals and for reducing poverty in the country. With the advancement of science and technology, we have seen the development in the field of statistics where it has become an instrument to assess collected data for various researches in education, development and planning activities. We have to know how to use it properly in a modern way.
In his speech, Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin mentioned that the year 1974 and 2010 have significance for us, as the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in 1974. The year 2010 has also importance, as he said that United Nation also declared October 20 as "World Statistics Day". Now, it is our duty is to evaluate the importance of statistics so that we can present the reality in the field of our social and economic development meaningfully.
