World Teachers' Day

Monday, 7 October 2024

The World Teachers' Day is observed to honour and celebrate teachers globally. The day is an international event held annually on 5th October to recognise the invaluable contributions of teachers. Established in 1994, it commemorates the signing of the "ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers" in 1966. This recommendation, created by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is a key instrument to address the status and working conditions of teachers worldwide. It outlines policies related to teacher recruitment, training, employment, and working conditions. The day seeks to appreciate, evaluate, and enhance the role of educators while drawing attention to issues related to teaching.
This year, the theme of the World Teachers' Day focuses on recognising and amplifying teachers' voices while working towards a new social contract for education.
Tachers play a pivotal role in shaping the minds and futures of countless individuals. They are not only sources of knowledge but also mentors, motivators, and role models. Their responsibilities extend far beyond the classroom, contributing to the overall development of their students.
As a student, what do I expect from my teachers? I want them to teach without discrimination, treating all students equally. Teachers should not show favouritism or differentiate among students. Unfortunately, recent history has shown some teachers becoming entangled in politics, leading to discrimination and unfair treatment of students.
In 2024, during the recent anti-government movement, several teachers fully supported students, marking a pivotal moment. Their contribution helped encourage students and played a key role in achieving success in the movement.
On this year's International Teachers' Day, we offer our deepest respect to all teachers and extend heartfelt congratulations.
