World White Cane Safety Day today

Friday, 15 October 2010

The World White Cane Safety Day will be observed in the country today (Friday) as elsewhere in the globe, reports BSS.
15 October was adopted as the world white Cane Day unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly on December 9, 1975.
Maintaining that tradition, the day is being observed in Bangladesh every year as in the rest of the globe in a befitting manner by the government and non-government organisations.
On the occasion, the Social Welfare Ministry, the Department of Social Services, Jatiya Protibandhi Unnayan Foundation, Bangladesh Jatiya Samajkalyan Parishad and Jatiya Protibandhi Forum have drawn up various programmes.
The programmes include rallies, discussions and distributions of white canes among the visually-impaired people.
Meanwhile, the National Eye Care with the cooperation of the World Bank and local and international organisations brought out a rally on Manik Mian Avenue in the city Thursday.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Gawhar Rizvi inaugurated the rally as the chief guest.
According to the National Alliance of Disabled People's Organisation (NADPO), there are 314 million visually-impaired people in the country.
