World Woman Day

Sunday, 8 March 2009

THE World Woman Day, March 8, is an important day, reminding us about the self-sacrifice of women for their rights.

Women in our country enjoys a special position. From 1991 in all elections in Bangladesh the people elected women as their prime ministers. At present three important ministers of the country are women. We can be proud of women leadership. In a country when the prime minister and three important ministers are women, everybody expects women's position to be good. But the reality is different. Everyday we read in newspapers accounts of discrimination of violence against women. Incidents of femicide are also reported. Dowry and incidents of abduction and acid throwing also distress women.

Parents are often reluctant to send their girls to school for lack of security. These are matters of shame.

But it is also true that women are occupying, through competition, senior positions in education, administration and business. In politics they now lead Bangladesh. But we have to think about the deprived women, who do not get their due. Any crime against women including domestic violence deserves exemplary punishment.
