Worrying fall in manpower export
Friday, 2 July 2010
Overseas employment for Bangladeshis has been on a decline in recent months. Employment, particularly in Saudi Arabia, the destination of the greatest number of Bangladeshi workers, and a few other Gulf countries, has suffered a major jolt.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina visited Saudi Arabia and also other oil-rich kingdoms in the same region. It was then hoped that her visits would help reverse the trend about manpower export to those countries. But in reality, things have not changed. The way to full-fledged resumption of the flow of Bangladeshi manpower to the Gulf region has yet not been unlocked.
It is imperative now on the part of the government to consider the situation and take up appropriate follow-up actions, in view of worrying drop in export of Bangladeshi workers whose remittances have been one of the few pillars holding up the economy.
