Wednesday, 19 February 2014
A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) Tuesday challenging the legality of police firing on the students of Rajshahi University (RU) during their demonstration recently, reports UNB.
Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua filed the writ petition on behalf of 14 university teachers and several rights organisations.
The writ will be placed before a HC bench for hearing Sunday.
Earlier on February 11, a legal notice was served on the government to explain as to why there was firing on the students of Rajshahi University.
The notice also asked the government to explain what kind of steps and processes were taken both before and after the opening of fire on students on the RU campus.
On February 2, the students of Rajshahi University demonstrated in front of the RU administrative building demanding of the authorities to cancel the decision to hike fees as well as the evening masters' programmes.
Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters on the demonstrators as they refused to disperse, leaving over 70 students injured.
Besides, the RU BCL men allegedly joined the cops during the attacks on the students.
Later, around 2 pm, 15 students sustained bullet injuries as police again opened fire and used teargas shells in front of the university' s library.
