Writ seeks cancellation of Nahid's candidature
Hearing today
FE REPORT | Tuesday, 10 February 2026
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) seeking the cancellation of National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam's candidature for the Dhaka-11 constituency, alleging that he holds dual citizenship of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Shamim Ahmed, a Jatiya Party nominee for the constituency, filed the petition on Sunday, his lawyer Mohammad Majnu Mollah said.
According to the petition, Nahid Islam acquired citizenship of the Commonwealth of Dominica after taking oath as an adviser of the interim government on August 8, 2024, allegedly abusing his position.
The petition claims he concealed this information in his election affidavit, which constitutes a direct violation of Article 66 of the Constitution, rendering him ineligible to contest the upcoming national polls.
The writ is scheduled for hearing today (Tuesday) before a HC bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan.
The Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commission Secretary, returning officer, and Nahid Islam have been named as respondents in the petition.
In response, the NCP rejected the allegations, stating that Nahid Islam has only traveled to two countries in his lifetime. The party described claims of dual citizenship as 'false and absurd.'
