Wednesday, 21 May 2014

A writ petition was filed with the High Court Wednesday seeking implementation of Safe Food Act,2013 to ensure safe food for all citizens of the country.
Assistant Director of Legal Action Bangladesh Sayeed Ahmed filed the writ as public interest litigation asking for a rule to explain why directives won’t be issued to Food Secretary for formation of ‘authorities’  to implement the section 7 and 15 of Safe Food Act,2013, according to a news agency.
As per the section 15 of the act, ‘Central Safe Food Management Coordination Committee’ would be formed while the section 7 mentioned that a constitutional body named ‘Bangladesh Safe Food Authorities’ would be formed to implement the act.
It also sought a directive to the law secretary to form an independent inquiry committee within seven days until the rule is disposed of and another directive to the committee to submit a report to the court within 15 days after identifying the main causes of non- implementation of the act.
The writ also sought an HC directive to Home secretary, BSTI director, Inspector General of Police, RAB director general, Dhaka metropolitan police commissioner for conducting mobile courts in  metropolitan cities and towns until the rule is disposed of.
Eleven people, including home, commerce, food, health, industries and law secretaries and BSTI managing director, have been made respondents to the rule.
