Writ seeks Tk 10m in damages

Death after circumcision

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 10 January 2024

A High Court writ has sought Tk 10 million in compensation from a city hospital for the family of a five-year-old boy who died following his circumcision on Sunday.
It also seeks an HC directive to submit within seven days a report by a probe body formed by the Directorate General of the Health Services (DGHS).
On Tuesday, Supreme Court lawyer ABM Shahjahan Akand Masum filed the writ as public interest litigation.
It also prayed to the HC to explain why the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) registrations of the doctors concerned should not be cancelled.
Ayaan, the victim, was circumcised at United Medical College Hospital in the capital's Badda area.
It also wanted to know in the rule as to why the licence of the hospital should not be cancelled for authorities' negligence into the matter.
The writ petition may be heard by the HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah very soon, according to the lawyer.
Shamim Ahmed, the victim's father, alleged that the hospital's mishandling led to the loss of his child.
On 31 December last year, Ayaan was circumcised under full anaesthesia at the hospital at Satarkul Badda allegedly without any parental consent.
