FE Report
Bangladesh will observe World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD)-2011 on May 17 with a view to creating awareness among rural communities about the use of ICTs and how to make them better, more sustainable and productive. This year WTISD highlights the theme "Better life in rural communities with Information and Commu-nication Techno-logies (ICTs)". Bangladesh Telecommu-nication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is going to organise a programme in response to the call of International Tele-communication Union (ITU), the UN agency for Information and Commu-nication Technologies. BTRC sources said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has consented to inaugurate the three-day programme as chief guest at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC). The regulatory body held a meeting in this connection on Tuesday. BTRC Director General (Licensing and Legal Division) AKM Shahidu-zzaman told the FE that they are taking all sorts of preparation regarding the programme. He said all stakeholders like policy makers, regulators, operators and industry people will participate in the programme where a three-day exhibition will also be held. A road show will also take place from BICC to National Press Club, he added. World Telecommu-nication and Information Society Day is celebrated each year on 17 May, marking the anniversary of the signature of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865 which led to the creation of the ITU.
