Friday, 18 July 2014

A young man was killed in a ‘gun battle’ between a gang of ‘miscreants’ and police at Hatirjheel in the city’s Rampura area on Friday. The dead is Apan (only one name), 26. Police claimed that the deceased was a ‘criminal’. Rampura police said, noticing a private car moving in a suspicious way, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police, led by its Assistant Commissioner Azad, intercepted the white-colour vehicle carrying some ‘criminals’ at Hatirjheel around 3:30am. Sensing them to be law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on the detectives, prompting them to retaliate with firing, which triggered a brief ‘gun battle’. ‘Apan was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while his associates got away,’ police claimed, adding ‘The injured was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the duty doctor pronounced him dead’, according to a news agency.
