C'nawabganj, Aug 25 (UNB): A young man was allegedly tortured to death in police custody in Sadar thana Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Bhikhu (28), son of Ismail Hossain of PTI Masterpara in the town.
Relatives of the deceased staged a demonstration on the Sadar Hospital premises at around noon in protest against the death of the young man.
They alleged that Bhikhu died due to torture inflicted on him by the police. They demanded bringing the responsible policemen to book.
However, the police denied the allegation.
Bhikhu's relative Mohammad Alam said a team of plainclothes police arrested him on charge of drinking liquor from Arambagh crossing Friday evening and beat him up mercilessly on the spot.
He was again beaten up at the police station, leaving him severely injured, following which he was admitted to Sadar Hospital, Alam alleged.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar thana Golam Mortaza said Bhikhu fell sick in the morning and was admitted to Sadar Hospital at 8:30 am.
Resident physician of the hospital Dr Asit Sarkar said the police took him to the hospital with pain in the belly and breathing trouble. He was given first aid and half an hour after his admission, he died while undergoing treatment, said the doctor.
