Youths become self-reliant rearing turkey hens

NAOGAON Apr 17: More than 300 both male and female youths of Naogaon district have become self-reliant through rearing turkey hens commercially from last few years.
The enterprise has been implemented by extreme poor and marginal farmers after receiving training and loan facility from authority concern, said successful farm owner Nayon Hossain, 45, at Bhobanypur village under Mohadebpur upazila of the district.
According to district livestock (DL) office source, over 100 small, middle and big turkey hen farms have been run elsewhere the district with assistance of authority concern. The enterprise is expanding rapidly due to its successful value, DL added.
"I have started rearing turkey hens investing Tk 50, 000 to purchase 50 chickens, 12 mature hen and 4 cocks of the hen item last year," said farmer Tanjila Begum,30, at at Bhobanypur village under Mohadebpur upazila of the district.
"I have already seen the appearance of success from last five months as the mature hen begins to lay eggs in radical way." she added.
The farmers need not to spend extra money to feed the hen as they can feed them water spinach, cabbage, maize and rice simultaneously. The farmers can collect the feed easily in cheap rate round the year.
The farms owner shows gigantic interest to rear turkey hen due to easy rearing process, small investment and lucrative profit. Another positive side of rearing the birds is, it contains a strong energy to drive the all sort of diseases.
District livestock Officer Dr Uttom Kumar said, a good number of youths both male and female in the eleven upazilas of the district are now self-reliant by rearing turkey hen. The farm also keeps a vital role to boost protein scarcity from the sectors, he added.
