Tuesday, 12 August 2008

International Youth Day-2008 will be observed in the country as elsewhere in the world Tuesday with "Youth and Climate Change: Time for Action" as the theme of this year, reports BSS.

Announcing different programmes to observe the day, officials and development experts told a "Meet the Press" programme Monday that youths could contribute the most in tackling situation and help reduce the environmental degradation that cause adverse climate change.

The young generation could engage their communities to find solutions to problems of climate change and reduce its impacts, experts said at the programme held at the IDB Bhaban in the city Monday. Youth and Sports Secretary Md Golam Mustafa Talukder, United Nations Population Fund's (UNFPA) acting representative Pornchai Suchitta, Department of Youth Development's project director Md Mizanur Rahman, deputy secretary Md Nasir Uddin Ahmed and UNFPA's National Programme Officer Noor Mohammad, among others, addressed the conference.

The officials detailed the government's programmes that include a youth rally to be brought out from near Shahbag crossing at 8:00 am Wednesday. The rally will terminate at Central Shadeed Minar after parading through the Dhaka University campus.

Speaking at the programme, Youth and Sports Secretary Talukder expressed his confidence that the youths could contribute the most in changing the world.

"We all need to create an environment where the youths can enhance their knowledge on climate and contribute towards ensuring a positive change," he said.

The senior bureaucrat informed that the government has almost finalised a policy for giving out awards to the youths for their appreciable contribution to the society. He said awards would be given to about 20 young people between the ages of 18 and 35 years on the occasion of National Youth Day, observed on November 1 every year.

Pornchai Suchitta said the UNFPA encouraged youth's participation and leadership, both as a matter of principle as well as key to successful programming.
