Yunus wants to follow law, face each case: Lawyer
FE REPORT | Friday, 4 October 2024
Self-motivated recall of court verdicts and orders against Chief Adviser (CA) Noble Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus in different cases is giving a wrong message to the nation, his lawyer said during a briefing on Thursday.
Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, a counsel of Prof Yunus, said, "We feel embarrassed over the self-motivated recall of the court verdicts and orders against him in different cases."
The nation is getting a wrong message that the CA is influencing courts to recall these verdicts and orders, which is not the reality, he said.
The lawyer also said Prof Yunus wants to face each and every case filed against him through due process of law.
A High Court (HC) bench on August 29 recalled its order and verdict, delivered over a tax claim of Tk 6.66 billion from Prof Yunus and his organisation Grameen Kalyan, after the change in the country's power structure.
The judgment was recalled on the ground that one of the judges of the HC division bench that delivered the verdict was once a party to the writ cases related to the tax amount.
The counsel questioned why the judge, who was once a lawyer in the cases, did not withdraw himself at the hearing stage of the cases.
"Due process of law was not followed while withdrawing the court order in the tax case," Barrister Mamun further said, quoting Yunus on the matter, who said acquittal should not be granted upon being found guilty just because being the CA.
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) withdrew a money laundering case filed against Prof Yunus and 13 others after he came to power.
