Zakat proceeds 'may help finance 58pc of annual dev programme'

FE Report | Monday, 18 August 2008

The proceeds of Zakat could help finance 58 per cent of the country's annual development programme if it is integrated with the government budget and could thus effectively reduce dependence on foreign aid.

This was observed at a zakat forum held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center (BCFCC) Saturday. Organised by Rahimafrooz, the forum was attended, among others by the Group Managing Director of Rahimafrooz Limited, Feroz Rahim.

Simultaneously, the forum also recommended that the government should allow income tax rebates against payment of Zakat at both corporate and individual level which could help increase tax collection.

M Kabir Hassan of the University of New Orleans, USA, presented the keynote paper on "Zakat Management and Social Development" while Deputy General Manager of Zakat Board of Selangor in Malaysia Aidi Munawir bin Ahmed Shukri briefed about the 'Zakat Management System in Malaysia'.

Secretary General of Interfaith Harmony, Bangladesh and Chairman of Masjid Council for Community Advancement (MACCA) Moulana Abul Kalam Azad also spoke on the occasion.

Feroz Rahim in his welcome speech said that as part of its religious commitment, Rahimafrooz has initiated and funded several development projects on its part, which showcases the successful implementation of zakat system in the society.

Later it was also informed that an institute called 'Centre for Zakat Management' is soon going to be established under the auspices of Rahimafrooz which will support different research projects on zakat and will also arrange for proper disbursement of zakat at private initiative and as well as work for raising awareness regarding zakat among general people.
