Zaker Party, Tarikat propose search panel

Monday, 9 January 2012

Zaker Party and Tarikat Federation Bangladesh backed the idea of forming a search committee to appoint election commissioners during a dialogue with president M Zillur Rahman Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.
Zaker Party said they do not think that the caretaker government system is a permanent solution. On the other hand, Tarikat Federation proposed an all-party interim government led by the prime minister to oversee election.
The president sat with Zaker Party's seven-strong delegation at Bangabhaban at 11am and with a 12-strong delegation of Tarikat Federation afterwards.
"We've told the president to form a search committee to appoint election commissioners," Zaker Party chairman Khwaja Mostafa Ameer Faisal Mujaddedi said after the talks.
"We requested him to organise a roundtable with participation of all parties before forming the search panel," he said.
Tarikat Federation president Nazibal Bashar Maizbhandari told reporters, "We've proposed formation of a search panel led by the chief justice to form an Election Commission."
He said they also proposed to form an all-party interim government led by the prime minister to oversee election.
"The interim government may be formed with five from Awami League, three from BNP, two from Jatiya Party and one from each of the other party's represented in parliament.
The current EC's tenure will expire in mid-February. The president will have to form a new EC before that, in line with law.
BNP will sit with the president on Jan 11 and Awami League on the following day.
