'Zero waste' packaging system

Tuesday, 30 July 2019

Plastic is abundantly used in our daily lives. One of the most popular usages of plastic is in the form of product packaging. Plastic is used in containers for products among other usages. After the product is used for example, in the tube of toothpaste, the container is usually thrown away often in the trash. Some dump it under the open skies in garbage disposal areas. Throwing away the plastic causes pollution which is extremely harmful for the environment. It adversely affects wildlife and wildlife habitat as well as human health.
In order to change this habit for good, we should follow the 'Zero Waste' philosophy. Zero Waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesigning of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The process recommended is similar to the way that resources are reused in nature. We already know that plastic products can be reused and recycled.
Organisations that use plastic for packaging can take a step where they can offer some minor incentives like some money, discount or other gifts in return for plastic used in their products like water bottles, soft drink bottles or heavy plastic packaging etc. This will lead to consumers returning the unused plastic so that the organisation can recycle and reuse it.
The government can consider providing extra benefits like tax rebates for organisations that are reusing plastic and using organic packaging. Such initiatives can address the plastic pollution by curbing it to some extent.
