ZFCL exceeds output target, runs with problems

BRAHMANBARIA, July 22: Zia Fertiliser Company Limited (ZFCL) produced 0.74 per cent more urea fertiliser in the last fiscal year (2008-2009) exceeding its target, according to sources.
The company produced 3,77,777 tonnes of urea fertiliser against its 3,75,000 tonnes production target, they added.
The company also produced 4,15,705 tonnes of urea fertiliser against its target of 4,01,000 tonnes during the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
The company supplies urea fertiliser to five districts-Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Chandpur, Kishoreganj and Netrakona.
The company has 674 dealers registered with the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC)- in its command area.
The ZFCL pays above Tk 550 million to the government as revenue every year, the sources pointed out.
At present the company is running with acute godown crisis.
The ZFCL authorities keep 60,039.40 tonnes of fertiliser at the bulk godown against its actual capacity of 40,000 tonnes, 14,990.70 tones at the beg godown, which can absorb 8,000 tonnes and 12,290.00 tonnes at the new godown which enjoys a capacity of 7,000 tonnes.
The company is also facing several crises including manpower, equipment and transportation.
The authorities were facing problems regularly in running the company with this insufficient manpower. It was difficult to carry out day-to-day work with this insufficient equipment, sources concerned said.
Local people urged the government to build sufficient godowns with a view to storing the excess production.
They also urged the government to appoint more manpower and to supply required equipment for running the company smoothly.
