BRAHMANBARIA, Feb 17: The stock of urea fertiliser at Zia fertiliser factory came down to 16,000 metric tons yesterday after production stopped on February 10, factory sources said.
Of these, 10,000 metric tons are in bags and 6,000 metric tons are being packed in packets, authorities of the factory told this correspondent.
In the current month, the factory will supply 68,000 metric tons of urea to seven districts--Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, Chandpur, Comilla, Habiganj, Netrokona and Sunamganj.
The factory authorities are supplying 1100 to 1200 metric tones of urea to dealers daily, which is too inadequate to the demand. If the present supply is maintained, the stock will exhaust if production can not be resumed.
In the first ten days of the month, 23,000 metric tons were supplied through dealers.
Due to shortage of fertiliser, the factory authorities are now rationing distribution to dealers, sources said.
If the factory does not resume production within a week, Boro cultivation will suffer.
In the face of the demand, the factory authorities have requested Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Factory (CUFF) to supply 12000 metric tons of urea to the dealers of Chandpur, Comilla and Netrokona, sources said.
In the last 25 days, the factory stopped production for 16 days in two phases and it is still out of order. It remained silent for eight days from January 22-30 after the compressor of the ammonia plant exploded. Then, on February 10 its reformer tubes became overheated and went out order.
It will take four to five days more for local engineers to repair it sources said. The authorities however said there will not be any crisis of urea in the area it is responsible for and the factory will go into production by February 20, they hoped.
The authorities said engineers were working round the clock to repair the faults and resume production.
