Zia's birthday Observed
Sunday, 20 January 2008
The 72nd birthday of former President and founder of BNP Ziaur Rahman was observed Saturday in a low profile, reports UNB.
On this day in 1936, Zia was born at Bagbari in Bogra.
Both factions of BNP placed wreaths at the grave of slain President Zia at Chandrima Uddyan separately.
They cancelled scheduled discussions on Zia's life and work following the death of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's mother Tayeba Majumder.
BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain along with leaders of his faction placed wreaths at the grave and offered Fateha at about 10:35 am. BNP leaders Nazrul Islam Khan, Selima Rahman, Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokon and Rizvi Ahmed accompanied Delwar.
Acting BNP secretary general Hafiz Uddin Ahmed along with leaders of his faction placed wreaths and offered Fateha at about 12:30pm.
Talking to reporters, Delwar said BNP is united under the
leadership of Khaleda Zia. He said BNP is committed to the ideals of Zia and vowed to free Khaleda to ensure democracy and development in the country.
"There is no split in BNP," he said, adding some leaders were misguided for reasons already known to the people.
Hafiz said, "today is the day for taking a fresh pledge to
follow the ideals of President Ziaur Rahman."
He said Zia introduced the politics of development and production to make Bangladesh a self-reliant country.
BNP leaders ZA Khan, Shah Mohammad Abul Hossain and Nazir Hossain accompanied Hafiz to Zia's Mazar.
