Zillur demands Hasina's release

Tuesday, 17 July 2007

Awami League acting president Zillur Rahman protested Monday the arrest of Sheikh Hasina and demanded her immediate release, alleging that the government action is intended to banish her from politics, reports UNB.
"Hasina's arrest was intentional--her arrest is only to isolate her from the Awami League leaders and workers," he said at his residence in his reaction over the arrest of his party president early Monday.
The septuagenarian politician, who took over the mantle of leadership of the party from its detained chief, said the arrest not only sparked the Awami League leaders and workers but also agitated all the countrymen as the people "couldn't take it easy".
Stating that Hasina is a "dignified person", he said that it was not necessary to arrest her in such a humiliating way, rather the government could summon her to court.
The AL acting president urged the countrymen not to be excited and requested them to get united at this crucial moment. Zillur Rahman alleged that it seemed that Hasina was arrested to implement the 'minus-two' theory, aimed at casting aside the two former premiers from their parties' leadership.
He informed that the party would go for legal fight in this case.
AL presidium member Motia Chowdhury and Dr Dipu Moni were also present during the briefing.
