Zillur demands reinvestigation in extortion case against Rehana

Friday, 26 October 2007

Acting president of Awami League Zillur Rahman Thursday demanded reinvestigation in the extortion case against Sheikh Rehana, as "the case is false, fabricated and malafide," reports UNB.
He said the investigation was "wrong" since the High Court, upon a writ petition, had stayed all further proceedings of the case pending with the lower court and the investigation officer of the case cannot proceed further.
Earlier, the lower court issued an arrest of warrant against Sheikh Rehana, sister of detained Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, along with an order to attach all her properties in connection with a Tk 29.9 million extortion case.
"The court issued the arrest of warrant to tarnish the image of the family of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and to hurt detained Sheikh Hasina," Zillur said, while talking to the reporters at his Gulshan residence.
He said Sheikh Rehana was never involved with any political party though she is the daughter of Bangabandhu and never elected to any parliament, nor she did any government job. "How the extortion case could be filed against her?"
The Awami League leader strongly reacted to Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid's remark during their dialogue with the Election Commission that there are no war criminals in Bangladesh. "If there was no war criminal in the country, how come 3.0 million people were killed and 0.2 million women raped?" he asked.
He requested the caretaker government not to allow any war criminals to participate in any elections.
Zillur further demanded immediate release of detained party president Sheikh Hasina.
Criticising the government for its failure to control the price-hike of daily necessities and mitigate crisis of fertiliser, he called for initiatives to control the price-hike and adequate supply of fertiliser to the farmers ahead of the Boro season.
About separation of judiciary, Zillur said his party was always in its favour and the previous Awami League government had taken many initiatives in this regard.
AL leaders Adv Rahmat Ali, Dr Hasan Mahmud, Dr Dipu Moni and Yafes Osman were present.
