Zillur-led team to join EC dialogue tomorrow

Saturday, 3 November 2007

Only Awami League presidium members, led by acting president Zillur Rahman, will participate in the Election Commission-sponsored dialogue on reform issues tomorrow (Sunday), reports UNB.
The party earlier decided that the 21-member sub-committee, formed to thoroughly review the EC's draft proposals for electoral reforms, would join the EC's dialogue.
Emerging from a meeting of the sub-committee at its Dhanmondi office, AL presidium member Tofail Ahmed informed reporters that the presidium members of the party would meet with the Election Commission and acting president Zillur Rahman would lead the delegation.
Tofail said they want implementation of the EC-announced election roadmap and requested the caretaker government and the EC to remain alert so that the announced roadmap would not be hampered.
"The party formed the sub-committee to finalize the proposals that would be placed towards the Election Commission. We have finalized the proposals and the central working committee had approved the proposals," said Tofail, who heads the sub-committee.
He said the sub-committee had decided that the presidium members, led by Zillur Rahman, would participate in the dialogue and acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam will accompany the delegation.
"We have prepared our proposals for holding a free and fair election acceptable to all and the proposals are based on 31-point reforms proposal of the 14-party combine."
AL presidium members Abdur Razzaq, Motia Chowdhury and acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and members of the sub-committee were present at the meeting.
bdnews24.com adds: Tofail said, "we'd never like any quarters do anything which might threaten the election roadmap,".
He asked the commission to allow them to take more than 10 members to the dialogue.
Presidium members Zohra Tajuddin and Amir Hossain Amu may not join the dialogue. Zohra is sick while Amu's wife died of cancer in Singapore two days ago.
