Zillur pledges to take up RMG issues in inter-ministerial meeting

CHITTAGONG, Feb. 14: Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman assured Thursday the stakeholders of the ready-made garment (RMG) industry of taking up their issues in an inter-ministerial meeting.
He gave the assurance while inaugurating the 6th Chittagong Apparel, Fabric and Accessories Exposition (CAFAXPO)-2008 in Chittagong.
The issues include port activities, power failure, gas-related problems, setting up of a garments village and issuing of Import Registration Certificate and providing loan facilities on easy terms.
Meanwhile UNB adds: Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said the Caretaker Government has taken measures for the market expansion of Bangladeshi goods, including readymade garments, across the globe.
He said this while inaugurating the 6th Chittagong Apparel, Fabric and Accessories Exposition (CAFAXPO), 2008, as the chief guest at the Engineers' Institution auditorium here Thursday.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has organised the three-day exposition.
Zillur Rahman mentioned that quota-free access to the markets of 27 European Union (EU) countries, Japan, Canada, Australia, Norway and New Zealand has already been ensured.
He said a bill regarding quota-free access of Bangladeshi goods to the US market has been placed at a meeting of the House of Representatives of the American parliament recently and it is expected to be approved soon.
The Adviser also said a MOU was signed with India over exporting 8 million pieces of Bangladeshi readymade garments a year.
He mentioned that Forum for Social Compliance of Readymade Garments has been formed.
"Two taskforces on the compliance and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) have jointly been working to bring the garment factories under compliance," he said.
The Commerce Adviser also told the function that the Caretaker Government has started work to turn Chittagong Port City into a commercial capital.
He said a meeting of cabinet committee would be held soon in this regard where action plan would be taken for implementing the transformation process.
BGMEA first vice-president M A Salam chaired the function and placed seven-point demands, including solution to the problem of gas crisis, establishment of backward-linkage industries, modernisation of port for turning the city into a commercial capital.
Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and BGMEA president Anwarul Alam Chowdhury were present among others.
Around 30 local and foreign organisations are participating in the exposition, which will conclude Saturday. Local Government Adviser Anwarul Iqbal Chowdhury will be chief guest at the concluding ceremony.
