Zoellick arrives in city Nov 3

World Bank President Robert B Zoellick will arrive Dhaka on November 3 for a two-day visit, during which he will hold talks with Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam.
Zoeillick will also meet the representatives of the civil society including Nobel laureate and Grameen Bank Managing Director Dr Mohammad Yunus and visit Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ).
As part of his visit to South Asian region, Robert Zoellick, the successor of the Paul Wolfowitz, is coming to Dhaka for the first time after taking over as the President of the Washington-based multilateral donor agency early this year.
The ex-President of the Bank, Paul Wolfowitz also came to Bangladesh for a one-day visit on August 21, 2005 when he assured Dhaka of the Bank's active partnership for alleviating poverty and supporting development agenda.
Official sources said the government is expected to request the WB chief to assist Bangladesh to bring back money siphoned off by some of the corrupt persons to different countries.
Besides, the sources said, the caretaker government might also seek the Bank's financial support to advance its reforms programme and for construction of the Padma Bridge.
Finance ministry sources said that the government would apprise Zoeillick about the recent progress in reforms to establish good governance and transparency.
"The government will highlight its reform programmes, especially in Election Commission, Public Service Commission and the financial sector," a senior finance ministry official said.
Finance ministry sources said the government will request the WB chief to raise Bank's financial support to over $1.2 billion from the assured $852 million to facilitate implementation of development projects in Bangladesh in the current fiscal year.
