‘All highways to be four-lane ones’

GAZIPUR, Sept 17 (BSS): Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Thursday all the highways across the country will be turned into four-lane in phases.
The minister said this after inaugurating newly-constructed bi-lane in Chandra area in Gazipur this morning.
"Works for turning Elenga-Gazipur Highway into four-lane will start by the end of this month and construction work of Joydebpur-Dhaka Rapid Transit Road and Metrorail Project will start in December," he said.
"Right now we have 1,752 kilometre highways and these will be turned into four-lane in phases, which will spare the citizens from the traffic congestion. This 500 meter-long bi-lane has been built at the cost of Tk 35.0 million and I hope people of the northern region will be benefitted a lot from it," Quader added.
The minister also reiterated his commitment to not allowing anyone to set up cattle market beside the highways.
Roads and Highways Department superintendent engineer Shahabuddin Ahmed, DIG of Dhaka Range Police ASM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman, additional deputy commissioner of Gazipur Rahenul Islam were present, among others, on the occasion.
