‘Concerted efforts needed to boost agri production’

RAJSHAHI, Jan 27 (BSS): Concerted efforts of all officials concerned have become indispensable to boost agricultural production to ensure food security of the nation, agricultural officials at a meeting said here today.
They viewed there was no need of importing rice in the last three years as we had adequate production to feed the people.
Besides, they put maximum emphasis on reaching the newly developed high yielding and high-valued crop varieties and updated technologies to the farmers' doorsteps to reduce the yield gaps.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) organized the meeting of all district and upazila level DAE officials of Rajshahi, Naogaon, Chapainawabgonj and Joypurhat districts held at the NCDP conference hall.
Director General of DAE Abu Hanif Mian, who addressed the meeting as focal person, urged the field level agriculture officials to explore the existing potentialities for strengthening the sector to cope with the people's expectations.
Deputy Director of DAE, Rajshahi Nurul Amin, DD of Chapainawabgonj Abul Kalam Azad, DD of Naogaon Nuruzzaman Mondal and DD of Joypurhat Ajahar Ali presented their respective district level present farming condition.
DAE DG Hanif Mian said the role of agriculture sector is very vital towards making the country's economy functional alongside ensuring food security. He called upon the field level officials to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty.
RCC to construct new drains
Another BSS reports: Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has started construction of seven-kilometer new drains in the metropolis at a cost of Taka 230 million aimed at removing its water logging problems. Mayor Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul inaugurated the work of the drainage project (third phase) in Sultanabad area today as the chief guest.
RCC Ward Councilors Mustaque Hossain Ratan, Nurun Nahar Begum and Nazma Begum, Chief Engineer Ashraful Haque and Executive Engineer Nur Islam Tusser, among others, were present on the occasion.
