‘Govt would go tough if blockade not withdrawn’

Saturday, 31 January 2015

Awami League (AL) Advisory Council Member Suranjit Sengupta said Friday the government would go tough if the blockade and hartal programme of BNP-led 20-party alliance is not withdrawn within next two days, reports BSS.
"BNP must take responsibility if the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations are hampered," he said while speaking at a discussion organised by "Nouka Samarathak Gousthi (Boat Supporters Forum)" at diploma Engineers 'Institute Auditorium in the capital as the chief guest.
He called upon BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to shun undemocratic and confrontational politics as no leader of the world could realise their demands from the government unleashing terror.
The former AL minister also cautioned BNP high-ups against creating unrest and undue pressure on the government through destructive activities.
"If you don't want to lift hartal and blockade programme, the government will be bound to take tough administrative measures against you," he warned.
Joint General Secretary of Dhaka City unit of AL Hazi Mohammed Selim and Harun Chowdhury of Samyabadi Dal also spoke on the occasion.
Advisor of the forum Sazzad Hossain presided over the discussion.
Don't amend Hindu family law: BMSP
Bangladesh Minority Sangram Parishad (BMSP) demanded on Friday that the country's Hindu family law should not be changed incorporating a provision of divorce, reports UNB.
Addressing a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club, the BMSP leaders also said the inclusion of the new provision in the existing Hindu family law is irrelevant as the precepts of the Sanatan Hindu religion contain the provision of 'judicial separation of conjugal life'.
Marriage in the Hindu community is not any kind of contract but a rite, and the women of the community are not interested in the enactment of 'divorce law', they added.
The parishad came up with the remarks in response to a recent statement by Advocate Elena Khan that put forth the question - 'why not divorce for Hindu women'.
