‘Make \\\'MV Miraj\\\' and \\\'MV Shatil-1\\\' capsize reports public’
Tuesday, 1 July 2014
Rights activists in the city demanded Monday the disclosure of probe reports on the recent capsizes of 'MV Miraj' and 'MV Shatil-1,' reports UNB.
Passenger launch 'MV Miraj-4' sank in the Meghna River in Gozaria Upazila of Munshiganj on May 15, killing at least 57 people, while 'MV Shathit-1' capsized in the Kolagachia River in Golachipa Upazial of Patuakhali earlier on May 3, leaving at least 20 people dead.
The inquiry committees submitted their respective reports after 40-42 days of the tragic incidents.
At a press conference at the Mukti Bhaban in the capital's Paltan area, the activists alleged that the reports submitted by the two probe committees were biased.
The press conference was jointly organised by the National Committee to Protect Rivers, Roads and Railways (NCPRRR) and the Council to Protect Passengers Rights of Bangladesh (CPPRB).
They demanded that both the committees be reconstituted with experts from Buet to ensure fair probes.
In his written statement, NCPSRR convener Ashis Kumar Dey alleged the culprits responsible for the two accidents remain hidden as biased reports were prepared by the probe committees.
CPPRB chairman Tusar Rehman said after the 'MV Shathil-1' accident, engineer and shipping surveyor Moyeen Uddin Julfikar was withdrawn on allegation of irregularities and corruption against him.
