Effective steps taken to withdraw harassment cases: Law minister
No govt role in deferring bar council election
Friday, 17 April 2026
Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has told parliament that the government has taken effective steps to withdraw politically motivated harassment cases filed during the tenure of the previous Awami League regime, report agencies.
"The current government is fully aware about the withdrawal of politically motivated harassment cases filed during the previous Awami League regime and has already taken effective steps in this regard," he said while replying to a scripted question from treasury bench member Md. Monowar Hosen (Magura-1).
The minister said the interim government had formed a committee to review such cases and based on its policy decision, no murder case was withdrawn.
He said the present government on March 5, 2026 constituted district level four-member committees, led by the deputy commissioners, to recommend withdrawal of politically motivated harassment cases.
The Law Minister also said the government was not interfering to defer the Bar Council election, but was instead extending support to ensure the election is held properly.
He made the remarks while National Citizens Party (NCP) MP Akhter Hossen raised the issue on the floor of Parliament under a point of order.
Referring to a Bangladesh Bar Council press release on the postponement of its election, originally scheduled for May 19 due to an energy crisis, the opposition lawmaker alleged that the government had interfered in the process.
Akhter Hossen further claimed that the Bar Council had been compelled to postpone its scheduled election the previous night due to government pressure.
