A search party that set off looking for a stolen swan in Brahmanbaria's Akhaura has stumbled upon the body of a woman being burnt in a pit. Locals have since detained a man and turned him over to the police in connection with the incident, reports bdnews24.com.
Akhaura Police Station Inspector Shahinur Islam said the incident took place in the Gazir Bazar area of the Upazila's Dakshin Union on Tuesday morning.
Police are having difficulty identifying the body as the entirety of the head and most of the body has been burnt. However, it is believed that the body is that of a woman as it was wearing a bangle.
The arrestee in this incident is Farhan Roni, son of Shahnewaz Bhuiyan, general secretary of the Dakshin Union Jubo League in the Upazila. Locals allege that Farhan is also involved in drug trafficking.
Citing locals, Inspector Shahinur said that a swan was stolen from the house of a person in the Gazir Bazar area.
The duck's owners - two brothers Enamul and Roman, and their cousin Obaidul - went out to look for the swan.
At around 07:00 am on Tuesday, they saw smoke from an abandoned tin house on Shahnewaz's land and smelt something burning.
When they arrived at the location, Farhan told them that he was burning leaves. They did not believe him, and Enamul and Roman asked to see inside the house.
Farhan then got angry and threatened to kill them. As their suspicions grew, they gathered a group of villagers together and went to the scene, where they found the body burning in the pit.
Later, they informed the police, who came to the spot and arrested Farhan and recovered the burnt body.
Shahinur also said: "Most of the deceased's body has been burnt. The CID and PBI have been informed to identify it."
