Adani's second unit of Godda power plant achieves COD

APJL expects to feed 1,496MW electricity to Bangladesh grid

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 28 June 2023

Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL) has claimed to have achieved the Commercial Operations Date (COD) of its second 800-MW Godda Ultra-supercritical thermal power plant on Monday.
The reliability-run tests, including commercial operation tests, of the unit was completed on June 25 in the presence of the officials of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), said a statement issued by the company on Tuesday.
Earlier on April 6 last, the first unit having a capacity of 800 MW achieved its COD, said the company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Power Limited and a part of the diversified Adani Group.
Power supply from Godda in Jharkhand, India to Bangladesh's grid is expected to further enhance the energy security of Bangladesh, said the statement.
The APJL is expected to supply 1,496 MW power from the two units (800MW capacity each) under the power purchase agreement (PPA) with BPDB executed in November 2017 for a period of 25 years via a 400kV dedicated transmission system connected to the Bangladesh grid.
The electricity supplied from Godda Power Plant would have a positive impact on Bangladesh's power situation by replacing costly power generated from liquid fuel, said the statement, adding that this transition may help Bangladesh to reduce the average cost of power purchased.
"Godda power plant will serve as a symbol of friendship and herald a new phase in the multifarious and long-standing relations of India and Bangladesh," SB Khyalia, chief executive officer (CEO) of Adani Power Ltd, was quoted in the statement as saying.
"APJL has completed Godda USCTPP along with a dedicated transmission line within a record time period of around 3.5 years from its financial closure despite being affected by three phases of COVID waves in India, China and Bangladesh that too with timing mismatch," he added.
The commissioning of Godda marks a significant milestone for Adani Group and BPDB as well as for the economic relations between Bangladesh and India, the statement noted.
This collaboration shall boost the growth of industries in Bangladesh and ultimately the Bangladesh economy will get stronger, it added.
