CTG PORT STRIKE
BGMEA, BKMEA seek info on losses from members
FE REPORT | Tuesday, 10 February 2026
The apex bodies for the country's apparel sector have asked their respective members to provide information on possible losses incurred due to the workers' strike at the Chittagong Port.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) in separate circulars on February 7 gave the instructions.
The move came after the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) asked for the same information from the associations on February 6.
The CPA said the workers and employees of the port had been on strike in various shifts from January 31 to February 2, and the operational activities were partially or completely closed.
When asked, Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, executive president of BKMEA, said all losses could not be measured in monetary terms.
Explaining further, he said if an exporter's container of fabrics remained stuck at port, their workers would have to work overtime or air shipment delays would have to be faced.
Such losses could not be determined only in financial terms, he said.
