CHANDPUR, Sept 26: Even after more than two decades of its establishment, the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) industrial estate in Chandpur is still plagued with various problems.
Located at Baburhat and founded in 1997 on ten acres of land, the industrial city has been suffering from power outages, lack of drinking water supply, absence of boundary walls and a gate at the entrance.
"The drainage system is also poor here. And the roads are yet to be developed," said Shahriar Khan, an officer of the estate.
Zahir Hossain Khan Milon, Manager of the industrial city, said, "Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many factories incurred losses since they could not sell their products. On the other hand, some are trying to overcome the Covid-induced losses."
Several readymade garment factory owners alleged that they have been facing problems in their production as the water supplied by the BSCIC contains high iron.
When contacted, Assistant General Manager (AGM) Muhammad Nurul Absar of the industrial city said, "We will address these problems and try to solve those as soon as possible."
According to the estate office, as many as 3,000 people are now working in the 28 factories of the industrial city.
The government allocated plots for 35 factories but only 28 are in operation now, he added saying that the rest have been remaining shut for more than 2/3 years.
The AGM of the industrial estate said, "We are now encouraging the closed down factory units to reopen."
